Now that we’re finally in February, it feels like spring is finally within reach. As soon as the weather permits, our landscaping team will be all-hands-on-deck designing and building beautiful new outdoor spaces throughout the Edmonton area. We’ve already got some exciting designs in the works, but we know that there are plenty of folks out there who are planning a big change this spring. If that sounds like you, here are some of the top landscaping trends coming to Edmonton in 2020!
Feeling Blue

The Pantone Color of the Year for 2020 is “Classic Blue”, and this bold jewel tone is showing up everywhere—including the year’s landscaping trends! In the gardening world, blue is the rarest flower colour, which makes the true-blue trend all the more covetable. Our neighbours to the South are already jumping on this trend with cool-toned blooming beauties. Here in Edmonton, we can embrace the blue wave with cultivars of certain zone 3-hardy perennials, like asters, clematis, irises, and phlox. Set off your blue plants with matching pots, statuary, or patio furniture in shades like navy, cobalt, or periwinkle.
Transition to Transitional Design
Contemporary, sleek design elements will be hotter in 2020 than they were in 2019—and as Edmonton’s leading landscaping company, we can assure you that transitional design was definitely a huge trend last year! Highlights of this design style include clean lines, geometric shapes, polished surfaces, and furniture that doubles as artwork. Stone, concrete, natural wood, and rust-proof metals are the hallmarks of this design style. Our favourite aspect of transitional design is that it gives our design team plenty of options for transforming challenging areas of the lot into ultra-modern features that add personality to the home.
Your Yard’s Hottest Feature

People have always loved to gather around a fire, and in 2020, fire features will become a landscaping staple. Fire bowls are easy to maintain and fit with the transitional design motif. However, fire features come in just as many styles as there are homes in Edmonton, and can be custom-built to match the shapes, materials, and dimensions of your landscape. You can even go a step further and elevate your fire feature into a complete living space with built-in benches or wraparound seating.
Go Bolder with Boulders

Walk-out basements are one of the biggest trends in Edmonton’s housing market, and just about every home with a walkout has accompanying wing walls. The standard concrete wing wall isn’t everyone’s taste, so many homeowners are looking for a more attractive alternative. The gold standard are wing walls constructed from boulders, which add a stunning visual element to the overall landscape design. While natural stone boulders are very popular and lend a rustic, natural element that evokes the Rocky Mountains, they’re far from the only option. Engineered boulders open up a world of design possibilities with unlimited sizes, colours, textures, and patterns.
Naturally Native

Native plants are starting to get more and more attention in the gardening community for their benefits to the environment and their time-and-money-saving qualities. “Xeriscaping” is a landscaping trend that is all about creating a self-sufficient environment in your yard. This approach uses native trees, shrubs, and perennials to attract pollinators like bees and birds to the landscape. Meanwhile, since each of these plants is already adapted to our ecosystems in Alberta, they require virtually no maintenance on your behalf. If you don’t mind a little bit of upkeep, you can complete the look with a nature-inspired water feature, like a pond or waterfall.
If you’re hoping to start the new decade with a brand new look, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. There’s still time to plan and break ground in your yard this year! Let us work with you to design your new favourite living space for years to come.
